NEQMAP’s 2020 Annual Meeting

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruption in education systems globally. The UNESCO Global Education Coalition reported that over 90% of enrolled learners from over 188 countries, including the Asia-Pacific region, were affected by school closures in April this year. As of November 2020, 12.8% of enrolled learners still face challenges to continue learning in a regular school setting worldwide. The issues of learning losses, evaluating the learning progress, and ways to ensure quality learning outcomes in this time of continuing emergencies are vital topics of discussion among education stakeholders.

To discuss some of these issues and challenges, the Network on Education Quality Monitoring in the Asia-Pacific (NEQMAP) at UNESCO Bangkok, with support from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), organised its 2020 Annual Meeting on 9 – 10 December 2020 on ‘Challenges in Monitoring Quality Education in Emergencies’. This year’s annual meeting as well as the NEQMAP Steering Group Meeting, which was held on 23 November 2020 prior to the annual meeting, were organised online through Zoom.

In the meeting, NEQMAP members including participating countries in the Asia-Pacific region were invited to discuss the challenges they have faced this year in delivering quality learning/education, how education systems responded to the challenges, and to identify remaining gaps/needs from which our network can devise relevant and tailored future activities to address those needs with mutual commitment.

Objectives:

  1. To exchange updates on members achievements, challenges and needs in 2020.
  2. To explore and strengthen the network’s collaboration in monitoring the quality of education
  3. To identify the network’s target activities in 2021 and 2022
