The Network on Education Quality Monitoring in Asia-Pacific (NEQMAP) hosted a knowledge-sharing webinar on 14th March 2023, titled “Thinking Outside the Box: The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 Creative Thinking Assessment.” The event featured a presentation and discussion led by Natalie Foster, an analyst at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The virtual event provided valuable insights into the newly developed Creative Thinking Assessment framework.
PISA, a triennial international survey, evaluates the education systems of participating countries by assessing the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students. Recognizing the importance of creativity in today’s rapidly changing world, the PISA 2022 assessment, for the first time, included a Creative Thinking component. This new domain measures students’ ability to generate original, valuable, and feasible ideas in various contexts.
Natalie Foster presented the framework of the Creative Thinking Assessment, highlighting its key features and objectives. The assessment evaluates three core aspects of creative thinking: idea generation, idea evaluation, and idea transformation. Foster emphasized that the framework aims to capture a holistic view of creativity, considering both the cognitive and socio-emotional dimensions of the creative process.
The webinar sparked an active Q&A session with the participants, representing educators, policymakers, and researchers across the Asia-Pacific region. Questions and comments focused on the potential implications and challenges of the Creative Thinking Assessment for national education systems.
