This Issue Note highlights the coping strategies of countries in managing high-stakes exams during the COVID-19 crisis. To contain the spread of virus, many countries have shifted to online and distance learning and assessment modalities. Countries have adopted different strategies that include organizing exams with special arrangements or exceptions to the rules (e.g. school based examinations with physical distancing, remote assessment with parental supervision), cancellation, postponement/rescheduling, on-line assessment, and introducing alternative approaches to exams and validation of learning (e.g. review of student’s past assessments/learning portfolio, validation of learning without exams). Issues of inclusion, fairness and exam stardards and validity were also highlighted.
